Pour tenir compte de l'élargissement aux autres continents, le PEFC a été rebaptisé en mars 2005 : " Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Scheme " ou " Programme de Reconnaissance des Certifications Forestieres " (l'ancien nom était : " Pan European Forest Certification Scheme " ou " Programme Européen des Forets Certifiées ").
