Assessment of the fire performance of upholstered seats and similar items intended for use in public sector establishments
The purpose of this test is to assess the fire performance of upholstered seats and similar items intended for use in public sector facilities.

The risk of accidental ignition and fire spread from an upholstered seat is generally assessed on the basis of tests carried out on test specimens or components, in accordance with standards NF EN 1021 – Parts 1 and 2.

Where the rules on transferability set out in this standard cannot be met, the tests are carried out on a specific test specimen or on a representative model.

The ignition sources used simulate those typically encountered by smokers, such as cigarettes and matches, and are applied in the position most likely to cause the seat to catch fire.

These two sources are those specified in the NF EN 1021 furniture standards – Parts 1 and 2.

The cigarette test is carried out first and, if ignition does not occur, the gas burner test – which simulates the flame of a match – is performed. Depending on the results of these tests, the seat is classified as CF or C EC, with CF being the highest classification.
