Determination of an efficacy threshold against European subterranean termites of the genus Reticulitermes
Standard NF EN 117 describes a method for determining the efficacy threshold of a wood preservative against European termite species of the genus Reticulitermes. This test determines the concentration at which the product prevents these insects from attacking the wood. (Laboratory method)

As part of the marketing authorisation process for European biocidal products, this test is referenced in standard EN 599-1 and is one of the required tests.

Blocks of Scots pine sapwood are treated by impregnation according to predefined concentrations. They are then exposed to termites for 8 weeks, during which time they are the insects’ sole source of food. At the end of the 8 weeks, the mortality of the insects and the level of degradation of the treated wood blocks are assessed.
