Determining the chemical composition of biomass

Determining the chemical composition of biomass
The aim of this test is to determine the chemical composition of biomass through the proportions of the main constituent families.

Biomasses contain varying proportions of 4 major families of compounds: lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose and extractables.

Determining the quantities present is a key issue for certain transformation or recovery processes. It is possible to consider different levels of detail in the determination: from proportions to molecular determination for hemicelluloses and activities, or even the nature of extractives.

Tests require small quantities of material, in the order of a hundred grams.
