Performance specifications for the suitability for use of a coffin – Part 2: characterisation of coffins and requirements for biodegradability in soil

This laboratory test is applicable to solid wood or panels used in the manufacture of coffins with a thickness of less than 18 mm, as well as to other materials used in the manufacture of coffins (walls, base and lid) regardless of their thickness.

Test specimens of the material are buried in biologically active soil, under predefined conditions, alongside test specimens of reference species for a period of 16 to 24 weeks.

Mass loss is assessed at the end of the test. The material meets the biodegradability requirements if its median mass loss percentage is within the median mass loss percentages of the reference species.
