Transfer of eucalyptus plant production techniques

FCBA has developed very special varieties of eucalyptus that are exceptionally resistant to frost and particularly non-aggressive through an approach that contributes to the preservation of endangered eucalyptus species (partnership with the University of Tasmania for 40 years). Their multiplication is however difficult and requires the use of specific in vitro culture methods developed by FCBA. A project was therefore initiated in 2016 to transfer and adapt plant production techniques to be used by nurseries specialising in in vitro culture (Martaillac, project leader) and forestry plants (Forelite).

ECOBULK – Demonstrators for a circular economy

The ECOBULK project aims to develop innovative solutions in a circular economy logic in 3 sectors: automotive, construction and furniture. FCBA is involved in the field of furniture and construction to work on prototypes integrating recycled materials, to evaluate the environmental, economic and social performance of the prototypes, and to participate in the development of tools to raise awareness among manufacturers (Mooc, serious game). ECOBULK is part of the European H2020 programme and has 29 partners in 11 countries.

Already equipped with a FabLab of around ten machines, the FCBA technological institute has developed its own FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printing platform with a large printing volume of 1 m3. The institute is also developing in partnership its 100% biobased thermoplastic yarns based on lignin and biobased polymers. FCBA is now part of the network of 3D printing platforms.

Development of a wood pellet produced mainly from hardwoods

The French wood pellet market has been booming since the mid-2000s, with production in 2018 approaching 1.5 million tonnes (30,000 tonnes in 2004). Pellets are currently mainly made from softwood (sawdust and other sawmill by-products, thinning logs) but this source of supply will be insufficient to support the development of the sector in the medium and long term.

SOLARWOOD

The SOLARWOOD project consisted in studying the interest of solar energy supply for drying, the most energy-intensive part of primary processing operations. A solar production installation was built and used to power the pilot ACC dryer at FCBA in Bordeaux. A reduction in energy consumption linked to solar energy was demonstrated by this pilot system, which allows for conventional drying operations, thanks to the automated management of the regulation.
