Knowledge of the wood used in a product is essential to ensure its mechanical and aesthetic performance over time.
There are 60,000 species of trees in the world, so it is difficult and very useful to have an automated tool for identifying species.
FCBA, with the support of CODIFAB, has developed a tool, XYLORIX Inspector, as a mobile application.
This application allows the identification of wood species for carpentry and structural work professionals (hardwood species Sipo, Sapelli, Bossé and Oak, and softwood species Fir, Spruce, Larch and Douglas Fir). Xylorix Inspector combines 2 technologies, imaging (taking pictures) and artificial intelligence (determining the wood species), explained in the video. This mobile application is currently being tested until the end of 2021 by carpentry and building professionals to assess the suitability of the tool to the demands of professionals.
Project led by our colleagues Didier Reuling and Nathalie Passédat.
